Radon & Real Estate

Course Description

As of January 1, 2008 the Illinois Radon Awareness Act will go into effect. REALTORS® should have a general knowledge of the Act. This course will cover radon & how it relates to the real estate industry, performance of radon testing in real estate transactions, who is qualified to perform the tests, radon reduction systems, what to expect if there is a radon problem, new methods, and preventive action for new construction.

Learning Objectives:

  • The history of radon in the U.S. and how it came to public attention
  • The recent studies of the European and North American Pooled studies
  • The adverse health effects of radon exposure with updates on Lung Cancer facts
  • Which organizations support USEPA's radon risk estimate
  • Describe real estate testing protocol
  • Discuss the importance of defensible results
  • Describe the Illinois qualification process and authorization to perform radon measurements
  • Describe the general cost of radon reduction systems and their potential benefits to the sale
  • Recognize acceptable, efficient reduction methods that work
  • Describe preventative methods available in new construction
