Join the Chicago Association of REALTORS®

The Broker in your new office determines whether or not they wish to hold membership in the REALTOR® Association. When he/she elects to hold membership, you are also required to have REALTOR® membership . We do not mandate membership, however, should you elect not to join, your broker will be assessed a fee for having a non-REALTOR® licensee in his/her office. We suggest you speak directly with your Broker about REALTOR® membership.

REALTOR® membership is three-tiered. Members also belong to their state REALTOR® Association and to the National Association of REALTORS®. C.A.R.’s state association is the Illinois Association of REALTORS® (IAR). A REALTOR® may be a licensed Real Estate Salesperson (or Agent), Broker or Appraiser. REALTORS® belonging to the Chicago Association of REALTORS® must be licensed by the State of Illinois.

Types of Membership

REALTORS® (or Agents)

A licensed Real Estate Salesperson wishing to join C.A.R. must be sponsored by a member of C.A.R. An agent cannot join C.A.R. unless their sponsoring broker belongs to C.A.R. An agent wishing to join C.A.R. must submit a completed “REALTOR®” new member application signed by their managing broker along with a copy of their license (or 45 day permit sponsor card) and full payment of all applicable fees. If their sponsoring broker participates in the Midwest Real Estate Data via ConnectMLS, an agent is expected to participate unless a waiver is granted by C.A.R. For an MRED waiver to be granted, the agent’s managing broker must submit an MRED waiver request form to C.A.R. An agent cannot participate in MRED unless their sponsoring broker is a participant of MRED.

Brokers

A licensed Real Estate Broker wishing to join C.A.R. must submit a completed “Broker” new member application along with a copy of their license and full payment of all applicable fees. A broker may be self-sponsored or they may be the managing broker of a licensed office. If their firm has a name different from their own, they must also submit a copy of their office’s license or DBA/articles of incorporation from the Secretary of State’s office. If the broker wishes to participate in MRED, they must submit an MRED participation agreement along with their application.A licensed Real Estate Broker who is not the managing broker of their sponsoring office has the same membership conditions as an agent (see above) and is considered an agent for membership purposes.

Secondary Members

A licensee may join any REALTOR® Association they choose without their broker being a member at that association as a "secondary member". NOTE: The exception to this is if the licensee wants MRED access; then their DR would also need to join C.A.R. Secondary members are REALTORS® whose primary membership is held with a local REALTOR® association other than C.A.R. For these members, NAR and IAR membership dues are paid through their primary association and all that is paid to C.A.R. are C.A.R. membership dues and MRED fees (if applicable). In addition, if their primary association is in a different state, they will also pay IAR dues to C.A.R. C.A.R. will waive our initiation fees and any portion of NAR and IAR dues the member has already paid pending accompaniment of a letter of good standing from their primary board along with their application.

Affiliate Members

Affiliate membership is comprised of people involved in a business related to real estate but who are not a licensed Real Estate Salesperson, Broker or Appraiser. They may not join NAR and become a REALTOR® but they may join C.A.R. as an affiliate member. The above named licensees may not join as affiliate members but must join C.A.R. as a REALTOR®.
